Message eventually, paint will fade and need to be repainted and paint is actually pourous and it also gets very fine cracks when very old and this takes away from that smooth glossy look we all like. painting over finely cracked paint will yield a less than optimal result and then yes a car will need to be repainted in its entirety

but if it it in great condition like this one then no dont repaint. besides paint chips on the front of the car and the mirrors and other forward facing surfaces there is always human error factor when a car is being repainted.

the factory robots really dont make mistakes when painting your car and know exactly how much paint to put on a panel where as a bodyshop painter is judging by eye and you never know, people have good and bad days.

I worked with one painter who did fantastic work for the most part but he was older and his eyes were starting to go. he often would ask me to come outside with him to look at paint chips and ask me which chip looked closer to the colour of the car, and he was the painter not me!

a repainted car can easily chip around the edges of the panel sesp doors and hoods. the edges around the doors and hood are very hard to sand optimally to give the new paint a rough surface to adhere to.

the edges are sanded usually with a scuff pad and not sand paper. it is preferable not to sand through the old paint to avoid getting to the bare metal since there is a zinc coating that comes from the factory underneath the paint. it is this zinc that gives modern day cars much better corrosion protection vs cars from the sixties.

if a cars paint is so old cracked and worn then stripping the car to bare metal either through sanding or a chemical paint remover may be necessary but avoid it if uneccessary for the sake of corrosion resistance, the body shop cannot reapply zinc coating before painting your car or at least I have never seen or heard of it beiing done.

also when you repaint an entire car, if it is done by a good shop they will remove all the parts like the moldings and glass, door handles, etc. thats good but during reassembly things happen and parts can get scratched.

plus when glass is removed the glass installer has to cut the urethane(glue) that holds the glass to the body of the car ie. the windsheild or hatch back glass and quarter windows.

during this cut out which is done with a cutting tool that looks like a wire they can accidentally cut the paint underneath and this can expose bare metal and if gone unoticed and the glass is reinstalled water/moisture can get underneath and start rusting and form a rust hole under the glass and you will have leaks

of course there are problems with overspray getting into places that you might not notice right away and generally a car with original paint in great condition is considered more valuable as it is viewed to have been babied more, parked indoors, driven less, possibly not driven in the winter salt and slush or not have been in an any accidents big or small.

also when the prepper is sanding a car, esp. the primer coat, it is almost impossible to see all the imperfections, after a car is painted with a shiny clear coat everything is suddenly very visible.

the prepper has touse his hands to feel out rough spots but can miss a small spot and it shows up after the painting is done. i know I have such a rough sanding mark under the base and clear coat of my car, I have to look for it but its there and I dont think it can be watersanded out

hope thats enough detail! lol

:as to why u wouldnt want to repaint the entire car? other than the rock chip thing.
